Coming down is often a confronting experience and it's often during this phase of the drug's effects that mental health issues are most noticeable. Psycho stimulant use seriously changes the normal levels of happy chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) in your brain. This causes the good feelings while in the high, and the negative feelings when coming down. With long term use, these negative feelings can persist for weeks, even after the come down has finished. If you stop using or take a break from using the levels can return to normal over time. Some people may already have some degree of mental illness and use psycho stimulants to help relieve the symptoms, this may provide temporary relief but the symptoms will return after the high has finished, and can be made worse by using. Psycho stimulant use can also bring out mental illnesses like schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders in those who already have a predisposition to, or family history of these illnesses. If you feel that you're starting to lose it, there are some things you can do and there is some help available too. The best thing you can do for your health is to stop using, even for a little while. If you start to freak out at a party or in a crowd, tell a friend and try to get to a quieter, less crowded place to chill out for a while. The feelings you are having will normally settle down after a while. If the feelings are becoming regular or taking a break doesn't help, talk to a doctor or a psychologist. They may be able to give you some medication or help you access a detox programme in which you rest and recuperate. |
